Institute background

Founded in 1959 as an independent nonprofit higher education institute, the Cambridge Institute of Advanced Research & Education is an affiliate of major research institutes and universities around the United Kingdom and has working relationships with major academic bodies and institutions around the world. With our administrative operations, research centre and teaching facilities based in Cambridge, we also have satellite Learning Centres inLondon and the Midlands, and in Edinburgh and Dublin. The Institute seeks to foster closer international relations through advanced scholarship and educational exchanges between the various nations of the world. The Institute provides an independent forum for scholarly enquiry and affords various financial support, facilities and resources to educators, scholars and advanced postgraduate students.

Outstanding Research facilities are provided through a diverse network of affiliate institutions, universities and associations. Our professional research staff afford comprehensive research support and assist with research design and planning.

Postgraduate study

Advanced postgraduate research students are an important mainstay of the community of the Institute. We consider our teaching role to be an essential component of our work, and superb opportunities and support are afforded to postgraduate students and postdoctoral members. Places are limited and entry requirements are extremely competitive, reflecting the world-class level of scholarship that is performed at the Institute.

We work in collaboration with several top-tier universities to afford access to a wide range of academic and research facilities. Our research degrees are administered and supervised by resident faculty and validated by accredited university bodies dependant upon the area of specialisation. We expect our students to be capable of the highest levels of scholarship and to possess outstanding research skills prior to entry.

Admissions requirements A first-class honours degree or equivalent is a prerequisite to student enrolment. We operate a rolling admissions basis, so applicants are welcome to apply at any time during the year and may commence study at begining of terms in October, February, or June. The application procedure is initiated with the submission of letters of interest together with a detailed research proposal and statement as to the relevance of the proposed enrolment to the missions and core values of the Institute, together with academic transcripts and recommendations. These submissions should be addressed in the first instance to: admissions@cambridge.institute.ac

New and Noteworthy

The Institute has led the way in assisting colleges and universities to develop and sustain global institutional linkages. In 2015, the CIARE established links to assist UK and Irish institutions in developing partnerships with institutions in Latin America, the Caribbean and Africa, expanding the program to China and the Far East in 2016. With support from governments in the UK, US, Canada, Ireland and Australia, the Institute launched an Indonesian partnership to help advance the capacity to provide high quality study abroad programs for Indonesian graduates.

The Institute recently coordinated study tours for UK- and Irish-based academics to German and Scandinavian counterpart institutions, which brought outstanding educators and policy-makers together to explore topics such as institutional diversity, structure and governance, and accreditation issues in higher education.

The Institute has launched a new Focus Group for Educational Capacity and Advancement with the aim to afford advice and services to universities, corporations, government ministries and other institutions to build staff capacity in managing world-class scholarship, international exchanges and enhanced postgraduate education programs.

Our work

By administering some of the most prestigious and innovative scholarship and fellowship programs in a fair, open, and transparent manner, the Institute provides talent from around the world with access to leading institutions of higher education and the international experience that is critical to success in the 21st century workplace. These programs are vital to promoting mutual understanding, and developing global leaders.
Building leadership skills and enhancing the capacity of individuals and organizations to address local and global challenges constitute a vital part of our mission. The long-term programs arranged by the Institute connect students and professionals with peers and colleagues around the world and prepare them for leadership on a host of current topics and issues essential to advancing peace and prosperity for all.
The Institute works closely with public and private higher education institutions to develop high-quality academic programs in cooperation with governmental bodies, international organisations, and corporations. Leveraging extensive networks and expertise within the higher education community worldwide, the Institute is uniquely positioned to help shape new universities and expand the capabilities and partnerships of existing academic institutions.

Resident faculty

The Institute welcomes established scholars and leaders from any area of educational endeavour who are at the pinnacle of teaching, research and publishing in their respective fields. We are able to provide places with full research, office and administrative facilities to our resident faculty scholars. Although we do ask that scholars make efforts to secure home-institution or home-country financial support, we are able to access a variety of funding schemes to supplement such support as and where appropriate.

Resident faculty are appointed on a rolling basis for a fixed 2- or 3-year term (although in some cases we will consider a shorter appointment where circumstances indicate a favourable benefit for both parties). Expressions of interest in joining the Institute must initially include a detailed letter of introduction, a detailed research proposal that includes a discussion of the relevance of the proposed research to the mission and core values of the Institute, and a complete curriculum vitae detailing publications, presentations, and teaching experience. Please address such applications to appointments@cambridge.institute.ac
